Hi all were doing a  WPQR for A514 Gr 70 steel 4 1/2" thick  and i want to make sure that the correct
filler metal is being used Table 4.9 base metals and filler metals requireing qualification does not
list grade 70 steel. what am i missing here?  where can i find the correct filler material requirements
thanks  Joe

I'm looking at a AWS D1.1 2008 code and you need to read clause 4.Qualification, Essential Variables 4.7 maybe this will help.

YES ? was my initial thought i've done a little research and found grades a thru q  not sure how that reflects to grades. i checked the astm book and couldn't find
grade 70 is it an error on the engineers fault i know they never make mistakes lol. im awaiting  a PQR  from another fabricator who is working on the same project to
see what filler material they used .  i will post my findings  Joe

A514 AKA "T-1" steel. Only comes in letter denoted grades. Each grade reflects a slightly different chemical composition that is formulated to give proper temper on various thicknesses. Example grade A plate comes in 1" and below, while the 4 1/2" plate posited by the original poster would have to be grades P or Q. PW stress relief is NOT recommended for this low alloy steel. You didn't say what process you are using. I successfully qualified several grades in FCAW using ESAB Dualshield 110. For something in that thickness range (I used 2 1/2" to qualify) about 350 F preheat. If the plate is not well soaked, you will get transverse cracking, especially with larger wire.

We will be using fcaw dual shield waiting forthe engineer to spec tensile strength filler
