Up Topic Welding Industry / General Welding Discussion / Value of Shorthood???

I know this topic has been covered in the past, but I cant seem to figure out just how to value a shorthood that has come available in my area recently.  I am unsure of the year as I have not yet went to look at it but I do know that it is a hand-crank only machine. (No starter or generator set-up.) It appears to be in pretty good shape and comes with 200 foot of lead that is supposedly fairly new. Could anyone give me a ballpark of what a fair price for this thing would be?

if it runs and welds in decent shape and complete no major rust issues 1500 max is what i would give just depends on how bad you want it i guess

I picked a shorthood up for $300, two engines, original machine but had not run since Eisenhower was a Corporal! A buddy of mine picked up a running machine in good shape around here for a $1000. Have seen a machine on cl the last few weeks for $1500 from a guy down in a place where I know there are several pipeliners living. The one he has got is nothing to look at but supposedly runs and welds. I've seen running machines in the $700-1000 range but may or may not be shorty's. It seems to me shorty's are like the holy grail next to the red face machines. Just the name alone invokes a certain percentage of monetary increase. Don't think I'd be paying $1500 for a machine I have to go out and throw the arm cracking tool on to start though, but maybe if the 200 feet of lead is as new as they say then maybe it would be a trade off.

Then again it all comes down to the guy selling it. Some know it's a good welder, used it at the quarry or something like that and that's it. Other guys, pipeliners, etc., know they are highly sought after, prized pieces of equipment and will put a dollar figure on it to match. It's like anything though, Grandma with the 68' Chevelle in the garage that her son bought new then got shipped off to 'Nam and never returned. She wouldn't know the value of that car to save her life. Now put that car in the hands of a guy who's sole career has been working on, restoring Chevelle's and it's a different story along with two different prices you'll end up paying to aquire the car in the same condition. Just my .02.....

Very true Shawn. That is exactly why I wanted to ask a few questions about this machine from a knowledge base I feel I can trust... (you guys here on the forum!) This machine is in pretty nice shape from the pics that the owner sent me, but Like you said... to spend 1500 on a machine that doesn't even have an electric starter on it just isn't in my game plan right now.

If the code is 671.. as cheap as you can get it. Because the flywheel won't have a ringgear, the backing plate won't have a hole for a starter, base model engine no port for a temp sender. The armature is press fir into the flywheel, etc.

Just so happens I know a guy that has a flywheel with a ring gear, backing plate with a hole off a 51 f162...
