I am currently learning to use the xray system we have to evaluate welds on 3/8" A36 steel plate with a 1/4" back strip.  I am mcurrently trying AGFA D7 film using the settings of 155 KVp, 5Ma, and a time of 5.5 minutes.  We are using lead backed cassette holders, developed manually.  The result of my latest xrays is a very dark image of the weld area.  I had sucess with film left over from xrays performed in the past, but i'm not sure about the type of film.  The manual developing chemicals were freshly mixed according to instructions.
Can anyone provide me with any tips on settings or film types that might show the weld a bit lighter?  Thanks in advance for any help !

Without knowing what kind of machine your running (constant potential etc) I'd say either reduce your time, or switch to D5.

Henry, Gerald,
Good on you for offering assistance but don't you see something very strange here ?
Who owns this X ray set ?
Who is this guys employer ?
Surely you must need a license for operating radiographic equipment in the States ?
You can't just buy an x ray set at the local store and take home and start shooting bits of steel in your shed.
Am I missing something here ?
Regards,
Shane

nywelder,
If this is a serious post what temperature was your developer and what duration did you have the film in the developer ?
Regards,
Shane

Valid point Shane! I don't think there are many places that 'allow' untrained operators to 'play' with X ray generators.:confused::confused:

I am currently learning to use the radiograph to evaluate 3/8" A36 steel plate with a 1/4" back strip.  I tried using an AGFA D7 filmon the xray system we have at 155 KVp, 5 Ma, and a time of 5.5 minutes.  The film cassette has lead backing, and is shot from a distance of 16".  The xray is very dark, and difficult to determine any defects in the weld.
Anyone have some tips on settings, film type, or any other recommendations for me ?  Thanks in advance for any help !

Do you know why?
Parent - By jwright650 (*****) Date 06-28-2011 18:40
I don't think anything was missing...there were two seperate threads about the same topic by the same member....so I merged them into this one thread.

I hope this didn't confuse anyone.....

There are no missing post's. There were duplicate postings in two different sections. It appears they are bieng combined now.

There were two threads.....I merged them. This particular thread(Op = 6/27/11@16:16) was in the correct location(the "Inspection" board) so I merged the thread (Op = 6/27/11@16:03) that was over in the Certification and Qualification board into this one.

Thanks to all for the help with my question.  The problem was the film.  Based on suggestions from the forum, the change in film type worked !  Again, many thanks to all who took the time to answer !
