Up Topic Welding Industry / General Welding Discussion / Coping pipe with a chop saw?

For fencing and h braces I've always coped pipe with a torch. A guy I buy pipe from showed me that he copes his pipe with a chop saw. I would think this to be faster and less messy as that drill stem is miserable to torch. To avoid multiple trial and error, are there any special fit up tricks for this, or simply slice off two pieces at a 45deg angle until it works right?

Someone posted a picture of a jig for coping pipe with a saw. It may have been a year or two ago.

A friend told Me what angles to use for a 90* joint, but I don't remember what they were.

You might be able to find it with a search on "Coping Pipe"

There was a fairly in depth discusion on coping pipe.

i believe i use 30/30 degree cut for a 90 degree tee fitup on 2 7/8

The angle is a 30. then turn it over and cut at another 30.

Could you resize those monster pics.  They are unusable as is.

I have had great sucess with 30/30, as long as both sides were cut equal. The last few times, the customer had cut the posts and not all of them were equal. This has been an ongoing project using 2 7/8 posts and 2 3/8 toprail.

Thanks,

the saddle looks great! We just was awarded a job where we are installing a 5 rail fence with 2 3/8 saddled between every post. We are using used pipe. Labor on that big of a job will eat u up saddling pipe with a saw. The job is 5000 ft long and post set on 10ft centers. thats 2500 rails. My ol chop saw couldnt keep up!!!!

No doubt about it.  On the used pipe I almost use the torch.  If there is a kid that needs work and can read a tape (those are hard to find) I will set up the saw and have them work from the opposite end.

Been doing that for years for cattle panels depends on pipe size or what you want it to look like.  33 to 37 degrees will work on most but the pipe we used on our panel frames 33 1/2 worked best.
