Up Topic American Welding Society Services / Certifications / Welder qualification D1.5 test plate material specification

I am getting ready to test a group of welders for aws d1.5 and am confused as to the material specification required.  The contract documents require that the steels used in the project be AASHTO M270M grade 345.  For welder qualification would using an easily obtainable mild steel for the test plates be considered an essential variable change? (  unlimited thickness/ 1" plate/ single v 45 deg lincoln e7018)

If you are qualifying WELDERS, not PROCEDURES, you do not have to match the steel grade used for the job.  You do have to use a grade of ASTM A709 or AASHTO M270.

See clause 5.24.1.1.

Thank you HG, this will be my first time working with D1.5 and the AASHTO base metals had me confused.

HgTx,
The clause you have noted is only applicable to steels with a minimum yield strength of greater than 620 MPa (90 ksi)
As far as I am aware AASHTO M270M Gr 345 has a minimum yield strength of 345 MPa.
Am I missing something ?
Regards,
Shane

The first paragraph of 5.24.1.1:  "Qualification established with any one of the steels allowed by this code shall be considered as qualification to weld or tack weld any of the other steels, with the following exception"

and then the reference to Fy >=90 ksi is the exception.

So for every grade of ASTM A709 except HPS 100W, you don't have to match the welder qual grade to the project.
