A small shop asked for some help qualifying a procedure and a few welders to get an aluminum gate project done for one of their customers. One look at the drawing brought up a good question....how do we glue these things together as there are no weld symbols at all...so they send out an RFI. RFI returns via an email with a one-line'r...."all welds are to be 5/16" bevel welds". Now that presents another problem. The material is all 1/4" thick....this is going to be a long week.

Did the customer specify D1.2?  man, I do not envy you.  Doing a procedure qual with aluminum is no picnic.  Make 'em pay.

Yup, they wanted these gates built per D1.2.....so we are off to the races. The detailer on this job is terrible....the lack of dimensions is horrific. The fitter is going to have to lay everything out full scale because the detailer only provided a few over all dimensions. One side of the gate is 35' long and has truss-like banjo lacing all over it and the other side is 25' long for a 60' wide driveway.
