we have an "inspector" that is mag testing the locomotive truck frames i am working on and he stated in off hand conversation that he is using an A/C yoke and that he can only detect surface cracks with it. so the question is if the yoke was D/C would he be able to find voids / gaps / underbead cracking, or is he full of it.

Yup,
He's telling the truth.
DC is good for surface to “just below” surface indications.
Usually done prior to UT testing.

Interpreting under surface indications with a DC yoke, can be a little tricky for the less skilled.
