AWS D1.1, table 4.1 gives WPS qualification position and table 4.10 Welder qualification- positions qualified for production weld.
Now, my question is:
If I qualify a procedure for 3G UH position(no CVN), the welder who welds the coupon qualified to weld only on 3G position?
or in other words, since 3G UH only qualifies 3G UH for procedure qualification, how can a welder weld 1G, 2G and 3G if he qualifies to the same welding procedure?
please someone help
4.18.1.1 Welders. The production welding positions
that a welder is qualified for shall be in conformance
with Table 4.9.
Regards
Table 4.9 is for base material and filler material requiring qualification, not for welder qualification.
thanks
Not in my copy
But it is an oldish copy!
Welcome to the Forum Peter,
According to the data provided;
Your *procedure* is qualified for Vertical with upward progression only. (Table 4.1)
The welder who did the test is qualified for Flat, Horizontal and Vertical. (Table 4.10)
The catch may be that it might be necessary to do additional procedure qualification testing to do production in positions other than vertical...
Procedure qualification testing (4.1) must be done in each position. (with the exception of 2G qualifying for flat and horizontal)
While Performance qualification (4.10) in some instances covers several positions with a single test.
So I think the welder is qualified for Flat, Horizontal and Vertical-up, while *that* procedure is only qualified for Vertical-up.
