I have qualified a WPS in accordance with D1.3 (2008 edition) Table 4.1, Figure 4.2c using 10 gage material. I understand that per Table 4.2 10e this allows me a minimum thickness of 16 gage. When it comes to qualifying welders to this WPS does section 4.7.2(2) direct me to perform seperate fillet weld, flare-bevel groove and flare-V groove welds in each position qualified, horizontal and vertical? This would indicate about six different welders quals. Also is the material thickness to be used 16 gage? Or is Table 4.4 the guidance which seems to contradict 4.7.2.(2)? Thanks for any help.

4.7.2 (b), (i) and (ii) explain the material thickness ranges.
Table 4.4 explains the joint ranges.
Yes multiple tests are required for joint types and positions.
However, the tests are ridiculously simplistic.

4.7.2 (b), (i) and (ii) in my reading is only associated with 4.7.2 (3) as they are directly attached to that section. 4.7.2 (3) only pertains to 'square groove welds' not fillets or laps. All of the sections under 4.7.2 individually refer to a specific weld joint type. I do agree that the testing is ridiculousoy simplistic. Thanks.
