We have purchased 304 high Mn (DIN 8556 1.4370) for MIG welding of SS plates and strips (2 & 3 mm thick). The wire is 1.2 mm dia with negative tolerance.

The welding works for approx. 10 minutes before stopping. The machine makes Squeaking sounds and overloads. Error sign is displayed on the machine. After 10 minutes or so, or after dipping the torch in water, the machine starts again, but welds for 5-7m minutes before stopping.

We have not faced this problem with our other supplier. All welding parameters remain same for both suppliers.

Welding parameters are:
V 17 to 25
A 80to 150
Feed rate is 4 to 7.5 meter per minute.

We are unable to understand what can cause this problem. The wire is smooth oil drawn and dia is very much under tolerances.

The nozzle of torch is 1.2 mm but we have tried with 1.6 mm also. The problem remqains the same.

Note :- Pls also suggest us what is impect of high Mn. and high Silcon in the welding property.

Please advise.

Many thanks in advance.

Please describe the welding machine/power supply units you are using. It may help in determining what your problem is.

Vinod,
What Charles is getting to, I think, is the duty cycle of your machine. Some smaller machines have thermal limiters that open up when it gets hot, to keep you from over working the machine beyond it's duty cycle rating. Please include this info in your reply back to him,
just a thought,
