Did that big bad Inspector hurt your feelings?
Parent - By Johnny Walker (***) Date 11-11-2011 04:23
No I have no feeling left to hurt! But a smart azz needs it every now and again!

I've wanted to slap some incompetent smart azz welders, and smart azz inspectors.

I'm sorry but a man saying he wants to slap another man sounds a little girly-man to me.  I guess I was raised different because if someone crossed my "line in the sand" it was "fist city time".  My little sister slapped me a real man would try to put me down.

Mr Fist City you ain't got a clue what you are Fu ck in g with. It's funny cause I wasn't trying to be tough cause I ain't gotta try. What I'm getting at is inspectors that get the swollen ego syndrome piss me off ask cactus he knows me I aint a di ckhead to anyone but seems like 265 pounds of pissed off welder who'll never be a inspector is about to get into trouble next time a idiot smarts off yeah sure I can laugh a joke but if I just met u a hour ago it ain't funny yet. He and I both are probably lucky I'm slow enough not to catch what he said till the next day 500 miles away." U call that slick kid " I said no sir I wasn't done yet he said o yeah your done go on home to momma . WTF is that I'm 32 years old and have welded everything from a sh it house door to a nuclear head pipelines to hot lines in 20 different states that's bull sh it for a guy with a position to be able to make or break a test then be able to talk like that so Mr fist city take how ever u want to I'll never come to Washington state probably but if I do u know my name I got a bare spot on a knuckle if u r game

Lets see now, your 32.  Well when I was your age I was living in Wichita Falls, Texas, Lawton Ok, Norman, Ok also spent some time in Arizona.  That would be about 30 years ago and I got to say, I had pretty much the same attitude you do right now.  The gentlemen I hung around with were, shall we say, a bunch of run-amok, barbarian lookin, fire pissin, hell raisers that the nobody bothered with.  Hell the Chief of Police of a little town once said on TV, if you don't bother them, they won't bother you.  Now I'm not saying I'm a tough guy because I got nothing to prove to anybody.  I don't need to call out people on the internet, all I know is I'm not afraid of a azz beating because it has happened to me a couple of times in my life.  I can say this though, those that have kick started my anger have had dramatic life style changes.  So if ya ever come up to Washington give a post first and we'll have a drink or two.  Then if ya want, take your best shot.

Well I look up to older folks and respect there knowledge and try and learn as much as I can from them but I never had alot of buddies that I rode with tell u the truth we never get along long enough what the whole deal started out with was a 60+ year old man but not u no offense by the way losing the respect I had for him I knew if I hit him it was gonna cripple his old ass maybe worse he was also kinda small no offense again but why waste our freaking time and money if no one is gonna pass your test under the age of 50 write it in black and white I don't care I prolly wouldn't hit a older man anyways cause they got guns mines in the truck. Anyways Internet fighting is fun till u find out u r fighting a elderly man sorry I just had to lol

If the inspector did that in front of a group of welders, he was not being professional. If he said that to you one on one and no one overheard what was said, that just may be his way of telling you the test is over. My stock term is "Today is not your day". I use a voice that only the welder can hear.
I had one welder that started throwing things and a couple of the welders I had tested many times over the years started laughing at him and was taunting him with the "Today is not your day" very loudly.
This really got the welder hot. I do not interfere with welder games but it came close to a war. By the time it was over the whole testing line knew the welder had failed and they thought the way he was reacting to it was funny.
The first time I ever tested welders the chief I was working under told me to look out the first three welders on the test line on their tacks. Just look at the tacks and tell the welder they were busted. Turn around and walk off. I had been welding for several years and had made and busted my fair share of test, but this was new on me. The chief was 25 years my senior and had pipelined and inspected all over the world. But to him, at that time, that was how he "Got the little darlin's minds right".
But there are still those out there like that. If this is the first one you have ran into in say 8-10 years of experience you are very lucky. They used to run in spreads like that.
In another 10 years when your back hurts, your knees give out and you are wearing a 2.75 cheater to keep up with the kids, that sucky inspector job will no look so bad. And when you have to tap a welder on the shoulder and tell him "Hand, today is not your day" maybe you will do it with dignity.

Really well said dbigkahunna....I am impressed.

COLD   John

I remember a man named Richard Dennis that was a boiler and vessel QC back when I got my feet wet...he still is, just lost track of where (maybe Kansas or Missouri).  He would go to the welders personally after something had been shot or a visual failed.  He always started with " Iam sorry Tom but...you got a cut out to do".  He never punked anyone down, he just told them matter of fact in plain English.  I might have busted more xrays under him then any one else ever BY FAR...BUT I love that man dearly cause he treated me with respect, he knew WTF he was doing, and he did his job no matter who it pissed off...those above or those below.  Some guys are just cocky, some guys have no patience, some are just natural born A55holes.  Whether a welder or an inspector or an engineer OR the guy checking out my groceries....some are not worth the calories it would take to drive my fist through the back of there skull.....it took me a lot of years to realize that because I am just a stubborn pig headed redneck dumbA((.    There is a pop song that is gay as heck but I still love it...called "you are not worth the salt in my tears"......I let folks like that just slide by me....I will save the ass whooping for those that I dearly love.

I never bust out a welder in the booth or in front of the other welders. I know what it is like to drive hundreds of miles to get busted out on a visual with no valid reason. And I've heard the stories about inspectors getting tuned up for doing so.
I always invite them into the office and treat them the same way I would want to receive the bad news. If they show skills, then I try to set up a retest if possible. Even golden arms have a bad day.

I'd figure if you give a welder time to patch a bead and the other has perfect bead it's only far to let the other patch the cap since I've ran beads all year capping gets kinda rough but I'm tired of thinking bout it we'll see how it turns out on the next one
Parent - - By Lawrence (*****) Date 11-13-2011 18:31
I have been busted out in the booth as well..  It was a bit humbling, but on the other hand, the inspector showed me exactly why my work did not pass and why it would be useless to continue the test. He also gave me tips on what to do the next time, which he diddn't have to do and which he couldn't have done as well in the office.

I was busted for ugly weld it was within code above the pipe it ain't my first rodeo he's to damn picky that was all
Parent - - By Lawrence (*****) Date 11-14-2011 04:34

Seen welders pass pass visual on a test that made me wonder how they managed to get that far without having the beads fall off the pipe. Ugly? You bet. Uglier than Rosie O'Donnell in a thong. But code compliant. Then have the Pipe Superintendent come by and tell me to bust them out. In these scenarios, I just politely ask them to pick up their tools, clean up the booth and report to the office. I don't do other people's dirty work. If it had no rejectable visual defects, I'll put my name on it and let the evil eye or one armed Johnny bust them.

"Still, the now-former coach will be allowed to continue as a guidance counselor at the school."
I'd say he still won... And he gets to share his wisdom will a wider selection of students and not just the football team.
