I have had several welders say that on older sa200's not to use your grinders while you are welding because it could damage your exciter. Is this true?

I've heard the same, but never witnessed said damage. I believe em, though.

THAT'S why you NEED a Vantage !!!!!

Do You ever weld with that machine Yourself, or is that work just for the hired help?
Parent - - By Cactusthewelder (*****) Date 11-13-2011 10:41
I use it !...............................sometimes

I figure there must be more money in keeping a crew busy than burning rod, provided You can find the work.

I never seem to have a problem finding more than enough work. I just don't look for it much anymore. It still seems to find ME ! And just so you know, That machine has 417 hours on it! ANd it is already 3 years old !!

I want to buy one, just to have it.  A Vantage 500 Air, is just one hell of a portable welding setup.

The exciter coil powers both the field for the welding power and the grinder. I can't say for sure if it would cause damage.

I believe the guy welding would have problems with the weld output fluctuating when the grinder starts, stops or changes load.

Just one more reason to buy a miller ha ha

At least not with a newer Trailblazer... Not so sure about the rest of them.

Most guys I've talked to and some at the repair shops said the 200 barely has enough auxillary to "power a lightbulb".

The welding and the auxilllary are seperate though correct?

Guess this is why I bought my Sa250, although I have not tried grinding with it while welding...seems I'm to busy welding!!

The Aux power on the generator machines is actually the exciter power [field power] for the welding output.

The SA200 has DC Aux. @ 1.75 KW at best, really old ones have less and really, really, really old ones none at all.
1.75 KW is enough to run 1 common grinder, but the DC limits You to non-electronic tools, and they SHOULD be DC rated.

Yours has 3 KW AC Aux. Not enough to brag about, but enough to run 2 common grinders or 1 of even the most powerfull ones.

You'd be surprised Dave, it'll run a Hobart 140 mig welder with 200ft of extension cord!! Had to check with Kaye before I did that but she let me know guys in Oklahoma building fence do it all the time! It's on the top end of it's limits but she'll do it!

Yeah, I thought the older ones were weak, didn't know how much though. I know when I was thinking about building that '51 that was the major problem plus you had to use dc compatible grinders. Didn't want to have to buy all new grinders for the truck.

You have 25 amps at 120 volts. The normal 120 volt plug on tools is a 15 amp plug. The next step up is the 20 amp, with the one prong crosswize. You have enough power to run 2 of many 120 volt tools, or one 120V real power hog and a few lights.

Most of the small MIG machines have a 15 amp plug, but draw 20 amps at full power. A few, like the Century 155 have a 20 amp plug but draw 25 at full power.

I think My machine will run one of those welders.....................................Along with the rest of the shop !!!!!     Sorry, I couldn't resist that one !

I know Cactus.....I need a Vantage!! :lol::lol::lol:

hell my vantage ran my pressbrake during a power outage a couple years back.    worked like a champ.

That 500 Vantage will run anything I have except the TIG welders. It would even run them at really low settings. Those big old ones need 200 amps @ 230V for rated output [600 amps], 300 amps @ 230V for full output [750-900 amps], single phase. The Syncrowaves need only a little over 100 for rated output. I kept the big one I used in low range on grid power in the shop. I didn't have the power to crank it up, and it only has a 200 amp torch on it. The only reason I have those big machines is because I got them cheap. The service has been upgraded since then.

Never had a problem with my old 200 and then running a grinder at the same time Ive run my 200 almost wide open with my helper grinding with a 9inch and a rod oven pluged inn.
