Ever hear somthing that makes your head explode.........
Has any1 ever been told its ok to "repair" a welder Qual?
Or have you ever been told....the root pass will preheat the steel........
These people should be worried should they not?
what do you all think about those 2 comments?

preheat on what thickness coupon?
Mild steel or some exotic high strength alloy?

for 3/8" mild steel, I'd say no heat required as long as it's above 32°F, if not 32°F, bring it up to 70°F before welding.
However, I still like to see them cook off any cutting oils or whatnot by waving a torch over the groove and wire brushing before starting in on the root pass.

Does your welder qual WPS prohibit grinding?

I guess you need to say a few words about exactly the scope of the repair before anybody can give you any kind of reasonable response.

Throw us a bone Mike.

the qual failed x-ray and they ground out the defect.
no grinding in the wps.
scope of repair grined half the test to get the JUNK out

Yeah,  I can see the whole "head explode" thing...

Sounds pretty much out of control.

Had a guy once insist on welding a downhill pass on a vertical joint to preheat the metal.
Couldn't convince the guy that was wrong.
Had to fire him.
Good riddance...

It would be true to state that the root pass would 'pre-heat' the steel for the REST of the passes.

The problem is that it is not PRE-HEATED for the root pass.

At FABTECH right now without any code books to check exact wording, but PLEASE, pre-heat is to be done BEFORE ANY WELDING.  Even any tacking.

Have a Great Day,  Brent
