Up Topic Welding Industry / General Welding Discussion / 516 carbon high temp-what filler rod?

I'm going to weld a small cylinder for a science experiment and they tell me the material is 516 carbon. Thickness from .125 down to .060. It will be machined afterward.
I plan to heliarc it with a backing gas. Thought I might try 33.5 included angle groove, no gap. Just fuse the root with pulse, and then fill with 1/16 or .035 filler rod. I've never heard of this stuff before, so I thought I'd ask you guys about a possible filler rod alloy. ER 70S-2?

Hi Stringer

If you are referring to ASTM A516, then the material is a standard pressure vessel grade C/Steel made for temperatures down to around -29°C. There are four grades within this spec. Gr 55; 60; 65; & 70, where the grade refers to the UTS in ksi. If this is what you are going to weld, then you do not need backing gas. ER70S-2; 4; 6 filler will do the trick.

If there is another 516 carbon, maybe someone else can tell us.

Regards
Niekie

Yes, thank you much for your reply, Niekie. This item is going to have water jacket cooling on the inside and perhaps fire on the outside. I'll probably get more information on it later today.
