i am just wondering if he could see anything and it the bifocals  helped any

Can't really see the "mask's" eye opening but it could be they are just slits; like the eskimoes use to minimize/prevent snow blindness. Or, as has been used by other welders; the filter lens is taped to the inside/face side of the aluminum printing plate and the safety glasses are used to wear the mask.
