As welding instructor who was trained as a welder in the Navy, I was taught and now teach that two electrode angles are required to control weld profile. One being the lead angle which is the forward or backward angle parallel to the weld axis and the other is the work angle which is perpendicular to the weld axis. In my association with other welders I have found that these terms are not necessarily industry standard terms. Does anyone know if there are "standard" terms for these angles?
I looked em up in a Johnsons Welding Encyclopedia and that seems to concur with my above statements. Didn't think about the welding handbook volume one. It's one of my favorite referneces.
I graduated in Nov 76 (4956) then went to Guam and stayed west coast after that. A great experience and a unique start to my welding career. I heard a lot about you Scotland welders, wasnt the Hunley over there then?
The AWS Welding Handbook volune 2 eight edition titled "Welding Proceses" has two figures showing forehand technique, torch perpedicular, and backhand techniques as well as the normal work angle for fillet welds with the GMAW/FACW processes.
