D1.1 table 4.11 Fillet option 3 (Fig. 4.20) any diam. pipe says only one macroeth specimen to qualify a welder   But  in 4.31.4 it states one quarter section of the pipe fillet assembly shall be loaded in such away that the root of the weld is in tension until it fractures upon itself  which one is correct or do you do both? Just wondering Thanks for  help in this matter.

That is weird, Fig 4.20 is a procedure qualification, and table 4.11 is about performance qualification.  All of the other figures that table 4.11 references are clearly labeled welder or welding operator qual tests.  But sure enough, 4.11 appears to allow the use of Fig 4.20 and a single macro, 4.31.4 says you need a break test.  If you look at the rules for the macroremoval 4.31.2.1(2), they only talk about the macros for Fig 4.37.

I wonder if 4.20 is an error in the table?

If my memory serves me correctly, the text of the code supercedes the tables if there is a conflict. I would say the table is in error.

Hi Bubba

The tests required are given in Table 4.11. (As referenced from 4.20.1.) The details as to how the tests are to be performed are given in 4.31.4 in the case of fillet weld break tests. It is not the intention of 4.31.4 to require all fillet welds to be given these particular tests. (This is also clear from the first paragraph of 4.20.1.)

Why figure 4.20 is labelled as only procedure qualification, and not also performance qualification, or if the reference to 4.20 is incorrect, would be another debate. Seeing as these requirements are the same in both the 2008 and 2010 editions of the code, it is probably not an error.

Niekie

Niekie is correct, procedure and performance qualifications are completely different.
