I just recieved a drawing of some pipe spools that are 316L, in the spec's they are to be built under ASME B31.3 Code and in the bill of material and the spec's it states ASTM A312 and ASTM A182 material not ASME SA-312. What my question is does ASME B31.3 reconize ASTM material. I do not have B31.3 with me now but will tomorrow then I can check. Has anyone ever come across doing work under B31.3 and using ASTM material?

Thanks
Strat

All of the B31 codes reference ASTM materials. Only the B&PV Code references SA or SB standards.

The majority of ASME material standards are identical with ASTM ones.
The ones that are not, are nevertheless based on ASTM standards, being somewhat stricter than ASTM.

Marty is of course right. Keep in mind, SA 'IS' Boiler Code, and has nothing to do with the piping codes. And even in boiler code you can use ASTM's you just have to make sure the edition of the the ASTM has been approved. Not only that, take Section VIII for example, non pressure retaining materials only need be weldable.
