Could anybody help me with an idea for the width of ferrel (backing strip) to be used when welding pipe to AWS D1.1??
A practical example:
Welding a 452mm I/D pipe with 14mm wall thickness. Backing strip wall thickness 8mm.
Joint type = single V-groove (B-U2a-GF) with 45 degree incl. angle & 6mm root gap.

I suspect that this has more to do with the designer part of construction, but I'm just curious.

Thanx.

My guess would be 1" wide unless it has to be RT'd in which it needs to be 3" wide. This is only a guess as I don't have the book handy.
