Up Topic Welding Industry / ASME Codes / Magnetic particle inspection in ASME IX

Dear All,

I work in the oil and gas industry.  Many of our customers request we qualify new welding procedures to ASME IX, even for structural welding.  They also request we include magnetic particle inspection (along with volumetric inspection) when qualifying new welding procedures.  I had a look in ASME IX 2011a edition.  QW-195 addresses liquid penetrant inspection however I cannot find a section that addresses magnetic particle inspection.  Have I missed it?  Or is it just not there?  Appreciate your comments on this one.

Thanks

Hi Firefly

ASME IX is only going to give information on NDT tests and acceptance criteria for tests called by ASME IX. LPI is included because it is a required test for weld overlay WPS qualification. I am not aware of a requirement for MPI anywhere in ASME IX, so is not addressed. (As far as I know.) Keep in mind that the LPI acceptance criteria given is not necessarily relevant for let us say a butt weld.

I would say that the best bet for tests not specified in ASME IX, is to use acceptance criteria from the fabrication code that you will need to meet on the job. Another alternative is that the client specification may contain acceptance criteria.

Regards
Niekie
