Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / TIG HF start: voltage and amperage?

Just curious, does anyone know what the voltage and amperage of the superimposed high-frequency start signal that is used to start the arc for TIG? I'd imagine it's a very high voltage and low amperage, but I'm just curious. Does anyone know that actual numbers that are typical?

Thx,
Dave

Depends on the manufacturer. I think the old Miller AB-BP's were around 7000 volts @ a very low (milliamp) current.

Thanks for the answer. What frequency also?

And speaking of frequency, why have high frequency rather than just a DC high voltage? Does the high frequency reduce the changes of a shock to the operator? Or is there some other reason?

Thanks,
Dave
