Up Topic American Welding Society Services / Certifications / Prequalified material thickness for flare bevel groove
- - By KWoockman Date 04-27-2012 22:18
If I am reading D1.1 right a GMAW single flare bevel groove in 1/8" material will not fall into the Prequalified criteria because the Prequalified PJP groove joint details in Figure 3.3 clearly states 3/16" material min. I am looking for someone to disagree with me because I find this as odd, most of the minimum material thicknesses qualified in section 4 is 1/8” material. I would like to hear your thoughts.

You can find prequalified procedures for flare bevel and other groove profiles, for materials 3/16" and below, in the AWS D1.3 sheet metal code.

Hi Tim,
Thank you for the reply, however the contract and fabrication documents specify the use of D1.1 only therefore I cannot deviate from there. Thanks again!

Perhaps it is because there is such a small radius on 1/8" wall tube that it is considered to be a fillet weld?

I could be wrong, but I put my money on a concern related to burn through. Prequalified GMAW is either spray or globular transfer; too hot for thinner material when welding flare bevel or flare vee grooves.

Hi Al,
The weld is a .125” X .125" tack weld that holds some expanded metal in place to an 11 GA. formed channel so I do plan on staying out of short arc. Thank you for the reply.

A good answer as well, and probably closer to what the line of thinking was.

Yup, AWS D1.3 is what you want.
