Hello,

I've got a project comming up, welding 4130 frames together. I'm guessing 1/2 to 3/4" round tubing. Motorcycle/ATV frames. No post treatment that I know. Need to know recommended filler metal(wire), and preheat/ interpass temps, if any.

Thanks
Craig

Hi Craig;

Sorry I don't have any more info for you, but I can suggest you use a filler metal of at least 90,000 tensile strength. an ER90S-xx or higher. As for the pre-heats, I don't have a clue, my guess is that the tubing isn't very thick, maybe a 1/16"? I kinda doubt you'll need to pre-heat, but I sure would try welding some cut off scrap first and see what happens. I couldn't find anything in D1.1 2002 on that mat. none of the ASTM numbers match. Maybe someone out there can be of more assistance.

Try this link for Lincoln Electric welding 4130.
Hope this helps.
