I am curious as to what the primary crack failure modes would be for aluminum alloys 1010/1030/1050/6010/6030 and 6050?

My guess is centerline hot cracks.

But what about micro cracks between the grain boundaries?

I can not find much published on the second failure mode.

Of course it seems like the best papers are pay for downloads that are expensive to order and mabye they just bait you with the short summaries they post online.

Thanks Henry.  That should give me plenty of reading material for a Sunday afternoon.

I am working on another contract. This time for robotic laser welding on aluminum can enclosures for lithium ion batteries used on wind and solar energy farms.  It is partly funded with DOE money.

We have to meet a hermetic seal requirement of 10^-7 helium.  We can meet it sometimes, but other times we only meet 10^-5 helium.  So far I have not seen any cracks but I am on a witch hunt anyway since they are still blaming the welds.

The primary consideration is the grain sizes being welded together.

My experience has been around  austenetic stainless and nickel alloys.

For cryogenic systems  the grain size had to be ~ 1/5  of the base metal thickness.

Have you looked at this problem with this approach  ?
