Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / Percentage of inspection in metallic structures API, WAS???

Hi all,
Anyone know where in the API or AWS suggests to me or inspection indicates the percentage to be applied to a structure that is built on offshore platforms, cantillivers ... (in particular a fire wall fabricated structural elements based on metal). see API RP 2A which speaks specifically of the elements that make up an offshore platform, here can be considered a cantilliver but not a wall.

All the AWS D1 structural welding code state that all welds must be visually inspected and meet the appropriate acceptance criteria. I take that to mean all welds, i.e., 100%, must pass the visual examination.

As far as API is concerned, what can I say? They are not really codes are they? They are recommended practices with at least one weasel word per sentence that allows the contractor to do as they please.

Best regards - Al

Reading the contract documents will probably give guidance on inspection requirements also, it's not uncommon for the documents to be specific on what and how things are suppose to be inspected.

Part of the answer to that will be based upon who you are inspecting for?  In house, customer, govt agency, etc?  There should be contract documents that detail the duties and responsibilities of each inspection agency.

Sometimes you need to check everything really close, at least to start the job.  But the docs may say you only are required to examine 25% of the welds.

Bottom line, you should be able to find that info in the job specs but not really in any code.  Yet, as Al stated, per code, ALL welds must have VT.

Have a Great Day,  Brent

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Background as an engineer in offshore petroleum started in 1977. It includes being considered expert in underwater welding, participating in API and AWS committees related to specification RP codes etc. The situation with me being the contractor would be whatever the client says and will pay for. In USA work I would require a company engineer signing off on the level of inspection.   I hope this helpful.
Sincerely

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Contacted an Engineer member of the AWS who is much more knowledgeable pertaining to the question and his answer is
Len:

ISO 19902, fixed steel offshore platforms, Annex F1, gives weld toughness and inspection provisions following the American Materials Class methodology, but does not mention firewalls explicitly.  Annex F2 follows the European Design Class methodology, which lets you pick inspection category A, B, C, D, or E.  Depending on class and category, RT, UT, and MT vary from none to 100%.  Visual is always 100%.
