Does anyone know where I can buy tooling for a bend test jig? I know I can make it but I am building a test rig for a company and I would perfer to buy the punch and die but I can't find a supplier online. Has anyone seen these for sale? Thanks!

Pipes,
  Here is an old thread that may help you.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I just realized that I can have the machining department at our tech school make these parts with ease. One more question though; what material should be used for the plunger? Will A36 work or should it be tougher or harder than the base metal that will be bent?

Look in the Welding Journal. There is a couple of companies that sell them.

Remember, you need more than one plunger and die if you are testing a range of base metals and different thicknesses to different codes. One size doesn't fit all.

Good call.

Like Al stated about the different ranges of materials....D1.1:2010 Figure 4.15, Figure 4.16, and figure 4.17 gives some guidance to the radius' required for the different grades of materials that are covered in D1.1.

I recently tested some 1/4 inch thick Nickel C-276. The tensile strength was above 100 ksi and it required a 3/8 inch diameter mandrel. Tough stuff to play with.

How about some HY-100, 130 or 140?

Respectfully,

Hello Henry;

The HY's are tough, but the bend diameter for them is much larger than for nickel. They bend easier when you use a large diameter mandrel. Nickel has an elongation of 40%, so the mandrel is rather small for the same thickness.

I thought you would know about these... I was correct in my assumption. :lol::wink::cool:

Respectfully,
