Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / Which filler rod for Aluminum 6061?
- - By DaveSisk (**) Date 01-28-2003 20:01
Will be using TIG. The material is 6061-T6 aluminum, 1/8" thick, 1.5" angle stock.

Is there a site on the Web where one can look this up?

Thx!

Filler wire 4043--(AMS 4190) is the most common choice for GTAW joining of 6061 Aluminum

That should do it

Great! Thanks for the links!

One more question...I'm planning on doing something really simple, all butt joints. Do I actually need filler for this w/6061 base material, or should I be able to do it without using squarewave AC TIG?

Thx!

6061 cannot be welded autogenously, you will have severe hot cracking. You must have a filler metal of a different composition than 6061, that's why you will not find any 6061 filler metal. Use the 4043 or 5356 and a slightly convex bead to help insure you have enough filler metal added to prevent cracking. If cracking persists, try starting in the middle of the seam and weld towards the ends. Let us know how it turns out.

Can we use AMS 4190 welding wire for metal arc welding in Al 6061 T6 pipe?

4190 is a common choice, as mentioned above 15 years ago.

Piping typically requires engineering input for welding operations and procedures that are qualified by testing.

If you are asking this question, you need some guidance beyond your question.

We are in need of MIG welding machine for Aluminium 6061 AISI 1020 and AISI 1018. Which are the most brands bought often?
