Up Topic Welding Industry / General Welding Discussion / JB Weld or weld broken stud on cast alum block?
- - By Waynelund (*) Date 12-14-2012 17:49
Had a client looking for a shop to weld a broken stud on the block onto which his starter was boleted. I did not want to do it and recommended JB Weld. Am wondering if this is the best solution to the problem.

Weld broken part of block back up and re tap hole.

Yah, +1 weld, re-tap. Clean first, behind, beneath, betwixt. Go crazy cleaning.

Is that a good idea? Welding a small boss onto an aluminum casting does not seem like a possibility without pre-heating the whole block. Am I wrong?

I would not want to preheat a block, no matter what.

From the OP, it sounds like the STUD is broken, not the block. Proper repair is to remove the stud if possible or drill out the stud and re tap using a helicoil or bushing.

Considering the 4,000 psi tensile strength of JB weld, the stud will pull off at "snug", well before "tight".

JB weld is like bondo good for filling holes and painting over not for attaching liad bearing parts

Just read some of the testimonials on the package: "One farmer says it is better than bailing wire" etc.

Best solution if you don't want them to come back maybe. Although, from my experience recently the cost for you to actually weld, tap the block costs multiple times more than a single tube of jb weld. Which means they wouldn't want to pay "that much" and jb weld would be worth a try. LOL!!
