Dear Experts,

We did a PQR to D1.5 2010 with SAW process and the process type was Mechanized and not Semiautomatic, but now they want to weld Semiautomatic also, the question is can I write a WPS with 2 process types Mechanized & Semiautomatic. Are do I need to do another PQR .

You can write a WPS for both types of welding with the PQR as long as you stay within the limitations of the essential variables.
It's very hard to qualify a procedure now without using mechanized welding with the heat input limitation of plus or minus 10% of the average heat input of all passes (except the root and cover)when running a PQR.

Thanks ctacker!

No problem. Its fresh in my mind from doing a couple of PQR's this week. We were using mechanized welding, but the welder must have bumped the travel speed switch and on pass 16, had a 3 inch difference in travel speed per minute, failed the PQR on that pass, even though it was faster with less heat input, it put him out of the 10% range from the averages.
The heat input limit seems to be causing a lot of grief for some.

I don't know is semi-automatic vs automatic and esential variable that would require a new PQR?

ctacker,
I only have 2008 edition which lists an increase of more than 10% or a decrease of more than 30%.
Has that changed in the 2010 edition ?
Where does the 10% "average" come from ?
Cheers,
Shane

Its new, I will try and post the clause.
edit: The essential variables still list what you said, 10% or decrease of 30%.
your WPS can go up 10% or down 30% but when doing your PQR you are limited to 10% -+ of your average of passes.
Eekpod, the essential variables do not list how the welding was done. auto,  mechanized or manual.

Is show in D1.5 clause 6

Is the same thing show in D 1.1 also?

No.

No trying to be a smartass, but make sure you understand the difference between semiautomatic, mechanized, and automatic. Even if you think you know, look it up.

I have run into a number of people that didn't and got themselves into a dustup because of it.

Best regards - Al
