One project specification say "CPGW" is complete penetration groove weld
and "PPGW" is partial penetration groove weld.

So what does "FPGW" mean?  Is it full penetration groove weld or something of fillet?

Full penetration groove weld?

"What we have is  failure to communicate."

The acronyms used by AWS is CJP for a complete joint penetration weld. Only groove welds can have complete joint penetration. And PJP is the acronym for a partial joint penetration weld. Again, only groove welds have "joint penetration."

Fillet welds are required to have fusion to the root, but not necessarily beyond. If the designer wishes to penetrate the joint, he should be specifying a groove weld, either CJP or PJP.

Going back to the unofficial definitions I use: Fillet welds go on the joint, groove welds go into the joint. I use these definitions whenever there is a disagreement whether the weld is a FW or a GW.  Thngs gt dcy whn txting bcms a wy of lfe.

YYQ,
Are you asking according to a code 'specification' or a project 'specification'?

If in a code it should be defined somewhere in the text or a glossary.

If in a project specification the engineers often will have a list of abbreviations as used in their specs.

Have a Great Day,  Brent

I found it in the project specification.New york state steel construction manual
And I have found its full name also. It is full penetration groove weld.

Thank you everyone.
