Just want to reassure that I am correct before I do my PQR. For GMAW to be prequalified you have to be using a tri-mix gas per Table 3.5 (d)?

Read clause 3 where it addresses shielding gas.

I have but that is where I get confused. 3.12.3 States "A Gas or gas mixture.........." and does not state anything other then welding grade and dew point requirements. But when you go to Table 3.5 Prequal. WPS Requirements GMAW note d It states "Prequalified shielding gas for all GMAW are argon and/or helium based and limited to those containing at least 0.5% but not more than 6% total, by volume, of oxygen plus carbon dioxide, including no more then 3% carbon dioxide". The way I read this is it has to have Argon and or Helium with Oxygen and CO2. We currently use C2 gas for SS GMAW.

Honestly have not spent a ton of time in D1.6 but this suprised me as a Prequalified WPS Requirement. Hoping I am interpretting this incorrectly.

Those pesky little footnotes. They will do you in if you don't take the time to read them.

Hi

My interpretatation is that the total % of CO2 plus O2 must lie between 0.5 - 6%. So, if you have say 2% O2 and zero % CO2, then the total of CO2 plus O2 is 2 + 0 = 2%, which lies between 0.5 and 6%, so meets the requirement. I don't think the intention is necessarily for a tri-mix, but does accommodate a tri-mix.

Niekie
