We are currently testing all of our Critical Weld Qualification Tests by cutting the test pieces into sections, etching them and visualy inspecting them for discontinuties. This a labor, time, and cost intensive means of testing. Are there any substitutions for this test? Would a fillet break test be of equal worth? What would be involved with UT?

Well,

You would need to let us know which code you are qualifying to?  Are you doing fillets or CJP's?  What materials?  Which welding process? Etc.

If you are doing fillets, since you mention fillet break test, then the UT is out.

If working to D1.1 you should be bending the coupon as well as doing macro-etch.  It really doesn't take that long and is a simple test to do.  (with the right equipment anyway)

Have a Great Day,  Brent
