Dear Experts.
In one of the WPS received from Sub-Contracator -
1-  Appl Code- ASME SECT IX
2 - Weld Process - SAW (1G) & FCAW ( 3G ) / Test Coupon - Plate
3 - Position Qualification Range mentioned- SAW(1G) & FCAW ( All Positions ).

Does any of the both codes ( AWS D1.1 / ASME SECT IX ) have any reservation in using each other code?

Essential/Supplementary variables in both code differ.

Pls share your thoughts on below mentioned queries

ASME SECT IX  x  AWS D1.1

QW-203 Limits of Qualified Positions for Procedures

Unless specifically required otherwise by the welding variables (QW-250), a qualification in any position qualifies the procedure for all positions.

1 - Query:
1.1 - Does it mean  PQR qualified in 3G position with CVN Test ( Plate )  can be used for all positions, ie – 1G to 6G & 1F to 5F?

QW-255-WELDING VARIABLES PROCEDURE SPECIFICATIONS (WPS) Gas Metal-Arc Welding (GMAW and FCAW)

2- Query
QW-405.2- Under the Supplementary Essential Variable – Crossed(X) to indicate applicability.

2.1 - Does it mean  PQR qualified in 3G position with CVN Test ( Plate )  can be used for all positions, ie – 1G to 6G & 1F to 5F?
2.2 – Can the same PQR can be used to weld welds without CVN requirement?

3 -QW-405 Positions
QW-405.2 A change from any position to the vertical position uphill progression. Vertical-uphill progression (e.g., 3G, 5G, or 6G position) qualifies for all positions.

3.1 - Does it mean  PQR qualified in 3G position with CVN Test ( Plate )  can be used for all positions, ie – 1G to 6G & 1F to 5F?

4 - Can a PQR qualified in accordance with ASME SECT IX used for Structural welds which shall be in accordance with AWS D1.1 and vice versa?

5 – Can PQR qualified in 3G Position ( Plate ) used to weld Pipe in 5G or 6G Positions with/without CVN Requirements. Weld Process used in this PQR-SAW(1G) / FCAW (3G)?

Thanks

To are differences that come to mind:

1- a PQR in accordance with ASME Section IX is not subject to volumetric NDT where as AWS D1.1 requires volumetric examination before slicing and dicing for the mechanical tests.
2 - the acceptance criteria for the guided bend tests are not as stringent for ASME Section IX as they are for AWS D1.1.
3 - the essential variables for Section IX do not include all the essential variables specified by AWS D1.1. Therefore, a PQR per D1.1 meets ASME Section IX where as a PQR per ASME Section IX does not meet AWS D1.1 provided the same base metal specification is used for both.
