So we got a little bored at work and had some AR500 plate laying around.   we heat it up to glowing red and quenched it in oil..  didnt seem to get much harder... Any thoughts?

The Manganese requires work hardening to get those Brinell numbers up.
Did you go the other direction and try to anneal it?

That makes some GREAT silhouettes for target shooting. But leave in normalized condition.

I confess my ignorance.
What kind of steel is AR 500?

Abrasion resistant steel.

How hard is it to begin with?  Abrasion resistant implies that it might be near max. as is.

I think that is the case here. We only made it more weak.

I find it unusual that in the as delivered, quenched and tempered from the mill that it would be of maximum hardness. If your not getting it harder with oil, then use water for the quenching medium. Make sure you've got it fully non magnetic prior to dunking and use plenty of water. Leave submerged and keep swishing it around until cool with out withdrawing it.

AR500 is commonly used as an armor plate steel.  it has a range of brinell hardness of 450-500...

Ever play with Armox 500? It's got more of everything (Cr, C, Mo, Mn and I think some Boron thrown in there just for extra measure.) in it that commonly makes steel alloys tougher. Ar is commonly used as a "cheap" armor plate and where flexibility is concerned. I've seen where Armox failed in the cyclic loading, but can't really go into detail or I'd have to shoot you... then some one else would have to shoot me just for having told you...

Put it in a power hammer for about a week! It'll get harder! LoL!!
