Hi, what the difference between E7018 & E7018-1 in application/welding? An idea about why some contractors ask for E7018 and non E7018-1? Thx

Because it is more expensive than plain 'ol 7018!

It has superior characteristics and money/cost is the only reason I can think of.
Kinda like don't buy a V8 when a 4 banger will still do the speed limit.

Hello John, I was led to believe that it was the Charpy impact rating, the "E7018-1" met the minus temperature Charpy ratings the plain "E7018" doesn't, or at least something like that. When I was working on wind towers they were using ESAB E7018-1 it was some pretty good running rod. My $.02 towards the conversation. Best regards, Allan

Allan,

True, and if I read the OP correctly, the contractors did not want the E7018-1 electrodes.
I plan to use the E7018-1 with proper storage when I start my wind tower project next Summer. I would much rather grab the squirt gun and smear in some good old NR211 for speed and cost.
It would be really embarrassing to have a failure on a personal piece of infrastructure for "going cheap".
Thanks for clarifying that. I tend to be brief due to lack of typing skills.

So John, if I am reading you right you're going to go green for powering up your personal space? That's pretty cool. There have been a few folks around where I live that have gone a similar route, one of my neighbors even went with the major solar panel installation. There were also a few who put a water wheel in the creek and used a car alternator and car batteries to provide yard and outbuilding lighting. Unfortunately the water police stepped in and made them pull the systems out, they were in violation of the endangered fish act or something of that nature. Well anyhow, keep those awesome photos coming(of your travels), as one of the others said: for those of us who are nailed down it's at least nice to see these places even if we aren't actually there. Best regards, Allan
