A question has come up regarding the Intermix of weld consumables on a California Seismic Job we are currently working on. The question here is that in Annex B Par B.1 the purpose of the Intermix consumables is defined as using FCAW-S with other welding processes in a SINGLE JOINT. We have some moment connections that frame into the web of the column and the width of the beam flange is equal to the width of the continuity plate. In our fabrication shop we CJP welded the continuity plates to the column flange using FCAW-G consumables and a single bevel weld. Out in the field they are using a FCAW-S and since the beam flange extends to the very edge of the continuity plate there is a small portion of the beam flange weld that overlaps our shop weld at the continuity plate. My interpretation is that these are really two different weld joints with the shop joint being the T-Joint a the continuity plate to column flange and the field weld being a butt joint from beam flange to continuity plate.

So my question is does AWS D1.8 consider this an intermix of weld consumables since we are working with welds in TWO joints that overlap and the very extremes of the beam flange to continuity plate weld?
