I am stuck.  I need to qualify a WPS with A108 1045 bar.  None of the codes I am reverting to have any reference to it (D1.1, B2.1, TACOM 12479550).  I am proceding as an unlisted material (I was hoping for an alternate material, plate form).  How do I qualify a Groove weld when I can not get material in plate form?  I need to perform a PJP groove to A572 Gr50 and a Fillet to Mil-A-46100 (High Hard Armor).  Each will be using 3/4" and 1.5" A108 1045.  Anyone have any ideas?

You might consider qualifying the WPS based on chemistry and state of heat treatment.

You may be able to look for an UNS equivalent and select a material specification with the same chemistry in plate form. I would also seek the customer's concurrence before actually qualifying the WPS.

As an alternative, qualify the WPS in accordance with AWS B2.1. Still, I would seek concurrence from the customer before going too far.

I do prefer to use the B2.1.  In this instance, the A108 type 1045 is not covered within the 2.1 either.

My reference to AWS B2.1 was as a methodology for qualifying the WPS. AWS B2.1 is often used when there is no specific welding standard that covers the intended work.

You will clearly need material to qual procedures. Armors are a problem because most need heat treatment. The engineer needs to spec this out to the Nth degree and you will need materials and a good testing lab to pull this out of your posterior. CYA
