In Table 4.3 in D1.6 2007, groove weld performance qualifications that were done in 3/4" plate has listed a minimum thickness of qualified deposited weld at 1/8" but the maximum qualified deposited thickness is listed as "Max. to be welded" Does this mean that if I weld a 1" coupon I am qualified up to 1" or is it unlimited?

I take "max to be welded" as Unlimited Thickness

edit#1 checked the Commentary for intent, but the Commenatry is so short that it doesn't cover much of anything.

edit#2 Hmm, now you have me questioning the meaning of max to be welded. I see your point now that I've re-read it.

What puzzles me is that it doesn't read like the same table in D1.1 as "unlimited" so I would think that there is a limit according to what the coupon size is. It's not very clear to me.

Thanks for your input.

My take on the subject is that the WPS can be qualified on a coupon that is less than 3/4 inch, in which case the WPS is only qualified to 2T. However, the welder could be qualified on 3/4 inch material, in which case his qualification would be limited by the qualified thickness listed by the WPS.

D1.6 differs from D1.1 in that the WPS is qualified based on the thickness of the test assembly, where as the thickness range qualified for the welder is based on the thickness of the deposited weld metal.

Best regards - Al

Thanks for your responses,

What I think "max to be welded" is that if there is a 2 inch thick part that has to be welded in Stainless 304 then I would have to get the welder qualified with a 2 inch thick coupon? That doesn't seem reasonable when all of the thinner groove welds get me 2T.  "Max to be welded" needs clarification from the AWS!

Just received confirmation from AWS, the question asked was:

Can you please clarify the meaning of the term 'MAXIMUM TO BE WELDED" as it pertains to Table 4.3 of AWS D1.6?

Answer:

In Table 4.3, the term "MAXIMUM TO BE WELDED" means unlimited.

This is listed on the website under AWS Code Interpretations D1.6

Thanks for the help,

Bob
