Hey guys,

I have a quick question, does D1.2:2008 Sec. 4.3 include ER4943 filler in any of the Fxx groups? I only have a 2003 copy with me, and it doesn't show that particular filler.

Thanks

No

The "Guide" claims that your alloy is an F23 in the filler metals properties chart...  My 2009 D1.2 does not.

Not in 4.3 and not in table 4.2

Thanks for the link, there's some good stuff in there.

It's interesting that they claim 4943 can be used where ever 4043 is used, yet I haven't seen any addenda stating that it is in fact ok. I'm not saying it not, I just haven't run across anything yet. From what I understand, 4943 is a relatively new filler metal, so I can see how it might take some time to work its way into the code books.

Thanks again for your help!!

There was an article on 4943 filler metal in the Welding Journal several months ago. I don't remember the details, but it produces stronger fillet welds than 4043 if I remember correctly.

I do recall the article, in fact, I think that article is what triggered the curiosity from my welders. We recently purchased 10lbs of the stuff so my welders could try it out for themselves. So far we have only used it on fixturing and other non-critical (non-code) applications, but they have been real pleased with its weldability so far. We haven't done any destructive testing on anything, so I'm not sure how it holds up for certain.

Welding Journal July 2013   If you are an AWS member you can access the article online :)

The article confirms 4943 aluminum filler is an F23, and has also has been adopted by A5.10 and the CWB.

I don't have the A5 doccument so I can't confrim.... But the Welding Journal is pretty trustworthy :)

I don't think it has been incorporated into SFA5.10/SFA5.10M yet. I have the 2007 edition which makes no mention of 4943. However, Lawrence is correct that the article does state that 4943 has been accepted.

Thanks for all the feedback (and education).
I'll need to brush up on some literature in the next few days.
