/ Flux core with gas?

Newbie question:
From some of the posts I see here it seems people use flux core and shielding gas at the same time. Is that true? I thought that you'd use one or the other.

Dave, there are two kinds of fluxcore: Self shielded and gas shielded. Both have flux, just the one needs a shielding gas just like bare wire mig.
