Hello, my name is Nick and I am a junior at Eagle High School. On the 15th of March myself and several other students from my school will be competing in a teams competition where we will be asked to answer ten multi-part, free-response questions. One of these questions involves welding. I was hoping that someone would be able to provide me with a reference or an explanation. Below I have listed the problem statement recieved by my team as well as my email address. Thank you.
Problem Statement:
Your engineering team is asked to investigate the important characteristics of the welding process, including gas-metal reactions, slag-metal reactions, surface phenomena, solid-state reactions, heat flow, solidification, reliability, and cost.

I think you can find most of your information in the AWS Welding Handbook. It's a 4 volume reference publication. I don't know if a school or public library would have it but you might contact a local fabricator or an engineering company to see if you can look at theirs.

That's some problem statement! I think that one would give most senior level welding engineering students a shiver up their spine!
You've got some heavy reading to do to prepare for those types of questions. The AWS Welding Hanbook mentioned by Mr. Guilford is one of the best references available. If you can't find a copy, here is a link to another good information source:

Chapter 10 may be the best source for your questions. Be sure and ask questions here about anything that you don't understand. After you read all that, plan to take a field trip to a local welding fabricator to look at the various processes and understand what you have read a little better. If you'll post what city/state you are in, perhaps someone reading this forum will help you with that part.
