D1.1/D1.1M
D1.2/D1.2M
D1.3/D1.3M

What does the "M stand for?  I always thought it was for metric, but I had someone arguing that it was military and it made me second guess myself.

Cheers!

The easiest way to answer is from one of the code books themselves.

So, take D1.1 and go to Clause 1.8, at least in the 2006 which is in front of me.  You have the US Customary edition and the SI (Metric or 'M') edition.

For all of the AWS codes and standards the 'M' designates the use of SI in brackets thus incorporating the two versions in one copy.

So all codes currently come as: AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2010 for example.  Indicating both measurement systems.

NOT MILITARY.  Someone needs to do their due diligence before getting you worked up over nothing but old wives tales.  No military versions here.  Those are totally different codes, applications, and publications.

So also in newer versions of D1.1 and D1.6 and B2.1 and every other publication I looked at.

'M' is clearly for Metric in this application.

There are usages where it will stand for Military but AWS D1 codes is not one of them.

Very well, thanks for the confirmation.  Shoot I searched a couple of codes looking for a definitive explanation and couldn't find it, I guess I'll look again in the area you referenced.

Thanks much!

D1.6 is also in Clause 1.8 and B2.1 is on the first page bottom right.

There are other references as well when ordering if you have the booklet on publications.  But, I felt the text of the code itself would speak loudest and clearest.

I took an orange coloured Highliter Pen and painted the edges of the "M" section of my D1.1 books since all my D1.1 work was in the USA, I rarely needed metric units...

I do the same. But only in Clause 3 Figure 3.4.
