Up Topic Welding Industry / ASME Codes / Transition from B31.3 to 31.5

Our shop is well versed in process piping B31.3 and have an opportunity to bid on an ammonia piping project to B31.5.

Our existing WPS's, PQR's, WPQ's satisfy ASME Section IX which is also referenced in B31.5.

What additional steps or processes does B31.5 require that we may not have in place under B31.3?

Thanks!

Are your WPSs qualified for notch toughness requirements? It is a trick question, because Section IX doesn't tell the user when notch toughness testing is required. One must know the applicable construction code to determine if and when notch toughness testing must be performed when qualifying the WPS. In short, qualifying the WPS as per Section IX without consulting the applicable construction code (section)  isn't sufficient.

As Al states, 31.5 is not EXACTLY ASME IX! You need too check against the standard if additional tests above and beyond are required!
