Interesting article including welding video in today's AWS newsletter about welding the light rail system in Portland, Oregon.

Cut & paste Google    www.oregonlive.com/.../index.../light-rail_steelers_zavala_bro.html

After fusing 2,549 seams along about 30 miles of rail between Portland and Milwaukie, brothers Arnulfo and Octavio Zavala on Tuesday connected the final section of TriMet's MAX Orange Line using a
thermite welding process that superheats aluminum, iron oxide, and alloy elements to produce molten steel and permanently join the rails.

Interesting that they call them "welders". Back in my railroad days, when ribbon rail was just getting started, they called them "operators". Not much skill to it, after all, since you just fasten the mold on, light it, then remove it and grind, being very, very, careful. Signal men used to use a mini-version for braze-bonding around insulated joints, with just the instructions on the mold box.
