We're having a project that requires welding of SS304 - A36 and SS409 - A36 base metals, could anyone advise if there are such pre-qualified joints for dissimilar base metal from AWS D1.6.

Will highly appreciate your kind advise please.

Hi Mark,
No, the A36/409 is not a prequalified combination in D1.6. I don't have my copy of D1.6 handy, but if I remember correctly I did a PQR for a A36/304 combination a few years back and it came out OK using E309-15 and E309-16. Very little difference in the mechanicals using either rod....your mileage may vary as I've heard others had difference experiences.

I knew that this dissimilar base metal requires qualification test but checking out once again just to be sure.

I think electrode SFA 5.22 E309LT1-1 would suit.
