We are doing a job and the customer is asking us to weld 409 material with 410 filler. The material is 10 gage sheet and will see 1000 F. Everyone I talk to tells me
to weld sheet material with similar filler, 409 with 409cb filler. Can anyone tell me if they have had a similar experience.

If the customer is wanting to weld it with 410 filler do what the customer is asking.

The customer may not be right, but the customer is never wrong.

I agree with Al, but sometimes the customer does like professional opinions as long as you do your homework and sometimes there are mistakes on prints by designers that have no knowledge in the weld field. (caught this many times). Not sure of the situation.
I have always used 309L (TIG).
410 is designed to weld stainless steels of similar chemical composition as well as to overlay carbon steels to impart corrosion, erosion and abrasion resistance. 410 material, being an air-hardening type, calls for a pre-heat and inter-pass temperature of not less that 400°F (200°C) during welding.
Typical Applications -
Surfacing steel mill rolls
Furnace and burner parts
Turbine parts

Good Luck

The customer is always the customer, but they're not always right.
