Their used to be a dual shield welding wire that could be purchased from Stoody. It was a seamless wire. I believe it was called the SF-1A. The AWS numbers were A5.20, E71T-1M. Does anyone know a product that is similar? I am looking for .045 dia and around 30 lbs.  ------------ Thanks

Welcome to the Forum Grumpy !

Here is a link to some Seamless E71T-1
http://www.rapidwelding.com/documentation/nst.pdf

If your desire for "seamless" wire is linked to a required low diffusible Hydrogen designation, there are some pretty good and less costly E71T-1 electrodes out there that have excellent diffusible Hydrogen ratings these days.
Here are some from Lincoln... ESAB also makes excellent stuff.

Also FYI,  AWS A5.20 & A5.29 have been superseded by:
AWS A5.36 Specification for Carbon and Low Alloy Steel Flux Cored Arc Welding and Metal Cored Electrodes for Gas Metal Arc Welding.

A5.36 Merges the two older specifications and lifts MCAW fillers from the solid wire spec.

Great info Lawrence, but the post to rapid welding doesn’t show how to purchase it. I live in Wisconsin. -------- Also why don’t they print A5.36 on the boxes of dual shielded wire, I keep seeing A5.20.

A5.36 is a new filler metal specification that incorporates both A5.20 and A5.29. It will take a while before the cartons listing the old designations will be used up. The old specifications will probably be printed on the cartons for a couple of years, but they cease to exist in a few years.

Best regards - Al

Just great, I'm assuming that I will have to re-write our Welding Procedure Specifications to reflect the new filler metal spec's. Oh well, I guess it's good to freshen things up from time to time...

Hi Grumpyoldman! First off Weldcome to the World's Greatest Welding Forum!!!:grin::cool:

Here's a listing for 122#'s of Thermal Arc SF-1A 0.045' Diameter - 11# rolls each in Los Angeles... They may still have the wire although the ad was listed 2 years ago... Make an offer, and here's the link:

http://losangeles.bidbut.com/a,37,2370508,Weldingwire-25Rialtofontana.htm

And this is the main website for NSSW: From March 1st 2013 Nittetsu as trade mark logo on products from Nippon Steel is changed to NSSW logo.
Meaning, instead of Nittetsu SF-1A the new logo will read NSSW SF-1A... here's the link:

With respect to purchasing the product, your best bet is to contact your local welding supply (LSW) outfit and ask them to find out whether or not they can order it for you and of course, @ what price etc.... And as Lawrence already stated earlier there are equivalent grades of FCAW wire offered by Hobart, Lincoln Electric possibly and a few other manufacturers of seamless FCAW wire also... Last but not least! Don't ever let them try to sell you something else that's almost as good... All the best to you.

Respectfully,
Henry
