I Have a two piece shaft to weld together Alloy 20 to 1018 steel. In the research I did it looks to me like Inconel 82 is a good filler metal match for this weld. Has anyone out there welded this material combination with Inconel 82?

What is the application for the shaft ?

Colin,
The application for the shaft is in a corrosive environment in a steel mill

What exactly is the corrosive environment, is it a pickling acid or something more aggresive ?

The reason i am asking is, we have an application using Alloy 20 welded to alloy 20 and we use 320 welding wire , which is the matching filler reccomended by the manufacturer. If you provide me with the details, i could look into this in more depth. Things are kind of slow for me right now so it would be no problem.

I can be reached at Cstewart@noram-eng.com or you can call direct at (604)681-2030 ext 255

May I know the details of Alloy 20 (I mean chemical composition). 320 welding wire is seem to me like a stainless steel materials. Please advice on the Alloy 20 details. I have experience of thermal spray worn off shaft (range from low alloy steel to medium alloy steel) and these can be easily repair with some nickel base powder spray then finish them by grinding or even milling.
