We need to qualify welders in accordance with AWS D1.1 (2010) paragraph 4.27 point 6a i.e. CJP groove T, Y and K-connection for box tubing.  D1.1 specifies use for fig. 4.27 and 4.29.  We plan to use pipe for fig. 4.27 and box section for fig. 4.29.  Table 4.11 specifies 4x side bend tests for fig. 4.27 which is no problem.  Table 4.11 specifies 4x side bends and 4x macroetch tests for fig. 4.29 which is a problem as in my opinion the geometry of fig. 4.29 is not suitable for side bend tests.  Furthermore the title of fig. 4.29 is "Corner Macroetch Test Joint for T, Y and K-connection..." which indicates it is for macroetch test only.

Could you please share your thoughts on this one?
