Younger ie newer CWIs have asked for explanation of the following discrepancy -
From AWS D1.1 1.3 Definitions
"The welding terms used in this code shall be interpreted in conformance with the definitions given in the latest edition of AWS A3.0, Standard Welding Terms and Definitions, supplemented by Annex K of this code..."
2.3.4 Weld Size and Length.
"End returns and hold-backs for fillet welds,..." ~ Annex K "end return, The continuation of a fillet weld around a corner of a member as an extension of the principal weld."  AWS A3.0 "end return. A nonstandard term for boxing." and the term hold-back is not defined in AWS 3.0 or D1.1 text or its Annex K though it is illustrated on Figure 2.6 D1.1.
Referencing AWS D1.5 when searching the index for End Returns it states; "End returns, see Boxing"
The CWIs concern is that AWS D1.1, 1.5 or A3.0 are An American National Standard and therefore should be Standard.

They are all a standard to and of themselves.  To think otherwise would be to say that API, ASME, AISC, AWS, Ford, Chrysler, John Deere, NASA, etc all have to use the exact same terminology and definitions of said terminology.

Just because D1.1, D1.5, and A3.0 fall under the bounds of AWS does not mean that they are in perfect alignment.  And especially when they are reviewed and edited and updated at separate times by different people from different industries and backgrounds.  One minute they may align and then somebody changes something and it takes a while before it is brought into alignment with all the other resources.

Let's just chalk it up to the human element and people not taking the time to be thorough in their review of the document when it is balloted.

AWS Standards are suppose to use AWS standard terminology found in A3.0 unless they include a definition in their glossary. However, nonstandard terminology does slip through from time to time.

agreed, its better than it used to be but still has room for improvement.
This is a case of where experience comes in and newer people and people who have been brought up in "perfect" conditions need to adapt and understand how things used to be.  We have some newbies and they get frustrated at some things and I tell them, just live and learn.
